NYU Stern Introduces New Essay Question

NYU Stern is introducing a new Essay 2 to its full-time MBA application for Fall 2013 applicants, the first major change in the essays in six years.

The question will assess an applicant's fit with the Stern mission and mindset about creating value in an environment of increased ambiguity. The School believes these qualities are essential to lead in today's global business environment.

"The central issues of our time--from fiscal and environmental sustainability to the rise of emerging markets and the coming wave of urbanization--cry out for disruptive leaders who can think across traditional intellectual boundaries and work collaboratively to harness the power of markets for the good of the world," said Peter Henry, Dean of NYU Stern.

The new Essay 2, titled "Your Two Paths," asks the following:
The mission of the Stern School of Business is to develop people and ideas that transform the challenges of the 21st century into opportunities to create value for business and society. Given today's ever-changing global landscape, Stern seeks and develops leaders who thrive in ambiguity, embrace a broad perspective and think creatively about the range of ways they can have impact.
        (a) Describe two different and distinct paths you could see your
career taking long term. How do you see your two paths unfolding?
        (b) How do your paths tie to the mission of NYU Stern?
        (c) What factors will most determine which path you will take?

Stern will keep its well-known "Personal Expression" Essay 3 that invites applicants to describe themselves to their future classmates, using almost any creative medium, including video.

Columbia University (NY) 6,669 8
Stanford University (CA) 6,618 1

MBA applications have historically increased in poor economic conditions. However the Graduate Management Admission Council's 2011 survey of graduate business school application trends found that about two thirds of full time, two-year MBA programs saw decreases in application numbers!

Key Points:

According to data from 133 ranked, full-time MBA programs that reported application volume to U.S. News for the fall 2011 entering class, the average number of applicants was 884.

Harvard Business School led the pack with 9,134 full-time applications.

Among the 10 schools with the most full-time applicants, the average number of applications was 5,414.

Eight of the 10 highest ranked schools in the U.S. News Best Business Schools rankings made the top 10 list for full-time applicants.

The other two, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, which ranked 9th overall, and the School of Management at Yale University, ranked 10th overall, were among the top 15 schools for greatest number of full-time applicants.

Each of the top 10 schools for full-time applicants saw a decrease in full-time applicants in fall 2011 over fall 2010, with the exception of the Business School at Columbia University, whose application numbers rose from 6,666 in 2010 to 6,669 in 2011!!

Essay 2: What do you want to do—REALLY—and why Stanford?
  • Use this essay to explain your view of your future, not to repeat accomplishments from your past.
  • You should address two distinct topics: your career aspirations and your rationale for earning your MBA at Stanford, in particular.
  • The best examples of Essay 2 express your passions or focused interests, explain why you have decided to pursue graduate education in management,  and demonstrate your desire to take advantage of the opportunities that are distinctive to the Stanford MBA Program.
Essay 3: Answer one of the three questions below. Tell us not only what you did but also how you did it. What was the outcome? How did people respond? Only describe experiences that have occurred during the last three years.
Option A: Tell us about a time in the last three years when you built or developed a team whose performance exceeded expectations.
Option B: Tell us about a time in the last three years when you identified and pursued an opportunity to improve an organization..
