Yale University President to Resign

The president of Yale University, Richard Levine, is to resign

“It is a source of great satisfaction to leave Yale in much stronger condition – academically, physically, and financially – than it was when I began in 1993,” Levine wrote, noting that the school has been his life since he and his wife, Jane, entered graduate school there in 1970. Having said that, the approach of his 20th anniversary as president seems to signal “a natural time for a transition,” he continued.

The Yale School of Management (SOM) has been under new leadership since Dean Ed Snyder joined from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in July 2011. 

“Our faculty is stronger than ever, and our deans and directors all have clear and ambitious agendas that will keep the University moving forward,” Levine said in his farewell address.

A sucessor for President Levine has not yet been named.

Yale SOM Essay Topics 2012-2013

Yale SOM has announced its 2012-2013 essay topics.
This year’s topics are as follows:

1. What prompted your decision to get an MBA?  When did you realize that this was a step you wanted – or needed – to take? (150 words maximum)

2. Describe a difficult professional decision you had to make.  What were the consequences, and what, if anything, did you learn?  Would you make the same decision again? (300 words maximum)

3. The Yale School of Management provides a leadership education characterized by broad-minded and intellectually curious students with diverse backgrounds, a distinctive integrated curriculum, connections to one of the great research universities in the world, and the broad reach of an innovative and expanding global network of top business schools.  What will you contribute to the Yale SOM community, and how will being part of it help you extend your professional vision? (300 words maximum)

4. What do you consider to be your most significant accomplishment?  Why? (300 words maximum)

Reapplicants to Yale SOM must respond to Question 1 and Question 4, and then compose a response to the following question:

What steps have you taken to improve your candidacy since your last application? (300 words maximum).

Yale SOM Improves Leadership Development Program, Appoints New Director

A retired Army general and West Point leadership expert will help reintroduce the Yale School of Management (SOM)’s Leadership Development Program (LDP), the New Haven business school announced this week.

Brigadier General (Retired) Thomas A. Kolditz, a retired Army general and West Point leadership expert, will take control of Yale SOM’s new LDP beginning July 1, 2012. 

Kolditz served most recently as professor and head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and was also founding director of the West Point Leadership Center.

SOM faculty committee has been evaluating leadership training at the school over the past year and developed a set of priorities for Kolditz.  The new program will emphasize the importance of understanding core values and commitments and the impact of decisions on a wide range of global constituencies.
