Elite European MBA Grads Prefer Google to Finance

More MBA students from Europe’s top business schools are choosing careers in Facebook, Amazon and other tech firms rather than finance.

London Business School (LBS), Cambridge’s Judge Business School, Oxford’s Saïd Business School, INSEAD and HEC Paris all report significant drops in the number of MBAs who have accepted full-time roles and internships at finance firms as the heaviest portion of the annual recruiting season comes to an end.

• At LBS, 30% of the class has accepted finance positions, down from 45% in 2007 and 2008. 
• At Judge and Saïd, the percentage heading into investment banking has dropped from more than a third of the class to about a quarter since 2008. 
• At INSEAD, only 14 graduates or the class of 2012went into finance, half the 2008 figure.

Amazon is already the top recruiter at LBS and Saïd and is projected to be the top recruiter for the graduating class of 2014 at HEC, according to the Financial News report. And smaller tech firms are also now competing with the banks.

92% of LBS MBA Graduates Employed Quickly

The London Business School's MBA Employment Report 2012 shows that 92% of  its most recent class of MBA graduates from London Business School (LBS) found employment within three months of graduation!

Of these:

•  35% took jobs in the corporate sector. 
•  33% took jobs in consulting 
•  32% took jobs in finance.
•  53% chose to work abroad. 

In September, the school launched the inaugural Global Business Experience, an immersion program through which faculty and students will have the opportunity to experience working environments in one of five global locations — New York and Boston, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and Istanbul.

London Business School Essay Topics 2012-2013

The 2012-2013 LBS essay topics for LBS admissions have been announced!

Here are the essay questions 

1. In what role or sector do you see yourself working immediately after graduation?  Why?  How will your past and present experiences help you achieve this?  How will the London Business School MBA Programme contribute to this goal? (500 Words)

2. Where do you see your career progressing five years after graduation and what is your longer term career vision? (200 Words)

3. Give a specific example of when you have had to test your leadership and / or team working skills either professionally, or outside of work. What role will you play in your first year study group? (300 Words)

4. Student involvement is an extremely important part of the London MBA experience and this is reflected in the character of students on campus. What type of student club or campus community events will you be involved with and why? How will you contribute? (300 Words)

5. London Business School offers a truly global and diverse experience. Describe any significant experiences outside of your home country or culture. What did you gain and how will your experience contribute to the School? (150 Words)

LBS Appoints New Associate Dean

LBS has Wendy Alexander former Member of the Scottish Parliament, has been appointed Associate Dean, Degree Programmes and Career Services, effective 30 April 2012.

She will be responsible for directing the Degree Programmes and Career Services’ departments and for the strategic development, operational management and academic oversight of the Masters programs. She began her business career at Booz & Co, specializing in strategy and organizational issues for global clients, after gaining an MBA from INSEAD. 

Following the 1997 elections, Wendy was appointed Special Adviser to Donald Dewar when he became Secretary of State for Scotland. She went on to become an elected politician in the first Scottish Parliament, subsequently serving as Cabinet Minister with responsibility for both business and higher education.  She was later named as Leader of the Opposition.

For the last nine years, Wendy has been a Visiting Professor at Strathclyde Business School In addition, Wendy has also been working in venture capital and private equity in the energy field.
