Tyler Smith, Assistant Director of Admissions at Booth, has written a post titled Behind the Scenes of Round One,”  providing details of Booth’s admissions process for Round One applicants, and Booth’s timeline for Round One interview notifications.

The Admissions Committee at Booth is reviewing Round One applications. 

- Applications are read in random order and interview decisions will be made on a rolling basis. 

- Booth will notify candidates whether they have been invited back for an interview beginning in mid-October

-  All candidates should receive notice of their status by October 24th.

The Booth Admissions Committee strongly encourages all applicants who are invited to interview to come to Booth for their interview.

However, alternate interview arrangements available in cities across the world. 

- On-campus interviews are conducted by Booth second-year student fellows.

- Off-campus interviews are conducted by second-year students or alumni.

 Booth’s final admissions decisions will be released at 9:00 AM CST on December 18th.

Chicago Booth Deadlines 2014-2015

The 2014-2015 Chicago Booth deadlines have been announced. This year’s three deadlines are below:

Round One

Application Deadline: September 25, 2014

Final Decision: December 18, 2014

Round Two

Application Deadline: January 6, 2015

Final Decision: March 26, 2015

Round Three

Application Deadline: April 7, 2015

Final Decision: May 26, 2015

Interview invitations will be distributed to select candidates following an evaluation of the submitted application materials.

Presentation/Essay Guidelines

Be reflective. We’ve learned a lot about you throughout the application, but what more should we know?

Interpret broadly.  “Who are you?” can be interpreted in many different ways.  We encourage you to think critically and broadly about who you are, and how your values, passions and experiences have influenced you.

Determine your own length.  There is no prescribed minimum or maximum length. We trust that you will use your best judgment in determining how long your submission should be, but we recommend that you think strategically about how to best allocate the space.

Choose the format that works for you. You can design your presentation or compose your essay in the format that you feel best captures your response. However, please consider the specific technical restrictions noted below.

Think about you, not us.  Rather than focusing on what you think we want to hear, focus on what is essential for us to know about you. Simply put, be genuine.

Technical Guidelines

File Size: Maximum file size is 16 MB.

Accepted Upload Formats:  Acceptable formats are PDF, Word and Powerpoint.

Multimedia Restrictions: We will be viewing your submission electronically and in full color, but all submissions will be converted to PDF files, so animation, video, music, etc. will not translate over.

Preserve Your Formatting: We strongly recommend converting your piece to a PDF file prior to submitting to ensure that everything you see matches what we see.

Chicago Booth also requires that reapplicants to its program complete the following essay question:

The American Economic Association last week awarded the 2014 John Bates Clark Medal to a professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. 

Chicago Booth Professor Matthew Gentzkow won the top honor, which is awarded each year to an American economist under the age of 40 judged to have made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge.

The Clark Medal, named after American economist John Bates Clark (1847–1938), is considered one of the two most prestigious awards in the field of economics, along with the Nobel Prize in economic science.

Gentzkow joins several other members of the University of Chicago community who have won the award, including Kevin Murphy, Gary Becker, Milton Friedman, Jim Heckman and Steve Levitt. Some 40 percent of Clark Medal winners go on to win the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, the school reports.

Short Answer Essays

Please respond to the following two essay prompts:

Presentation/Essay

The Chicago experience will take you deeper into issues, force you to challenge assumptions, and broaden your perspective. In a four-slide presentation or an essay of no more than 600 words, broaden our perspective about who you are. Understanding what we currently know about you from the rest of the application, what else would you like us to know?

We have set forth the following guidelines:

The content is completely up to you. There is no right, or even preferred, approach to this essay. Feel free to use the software with which you are most comfortable. Acceptable formats for upload in the online application system are PowerPoint, Word, or PDF. However, we suggest converting your file to a PDF to preserve your intended formatting.

There is a strict maximum of four pages (presentation) or 600 words (essay), though you can provide fewer if you choose. All content must fit within four pages (presentation) or 600 words (essay).

The file size is limited to 16 MB.

The document will be viewed electronically, but we cannot support embedded videos, music, hyperlinks, or motion images.

The file will be evaluated on the quality of content and ability to convey your ideas, not on technical expertise.

Myth vs Fact for Chicago Booth

Associate Director of Admissions Joanne Legler devoted a recent post on the Booth Insider Blog to debunking some common myths about the admissions process:

Myth 1: A campus visit is a must if you expect to be admitted.
Myth 2 : You must have a minimum GPA or GMAT/GRE score and have five years of work experience to be considered for admission.
Myth 3 : An interview with a staff member is different than an interview with a student or graduate.
Myth 4 : A letter of recommendation from the CEO of my company/Booth graduate I met once/the governor/the President of the United States would be an amazing addition to my application.
Myth 5 : It's impossible to be admitted during Round Three.

The Chicago Booth application process involves  two steps -

1) Application - applicants have to complete online application and send the supporting documents by the application deadlines.

2) Interviews - applicants will receive the interview invitation by mid decision dates of each round.

Essay 2

• Chicago Booth is a place that challenges its students to stretch and take risks that they might not take elsewhere. Tell us about a time when you took a risk and what you learned from that experience (maximum of 750 words).

• At Chicago Booth, we teach you HOW to think rather than what to think. With this in mind, we have provided you with “blank pages” in our application.
